horticulture technician - who should study?

This is very important for skilled migrants who would like to study Diploma of horticulture and become a Horticulture Technician. Since VETASSESS Skill Assessment application process and requirement is different from TRA Skill Assessment for most of others trade occupations. Horticulture Technician only needs to work a minimum of 20 hours a week to satisfy the criteria of VETASSESS Skill Assessment.

So there are 2 types of international students who can go for diploma or horticulture course:

  • who are finishing their study in Australia with no visa options to extend or students who have not decided what courses to study for Australia PR.

  • International students with a fresh 2 years of 485 visa has no options for PR in Australia.

The reason those visa holders are good to study trade courses in general and specifically Horticulture Course is that they can work and study con-currently and seeking for full time or part time job after they complete the course with another student visa (20 hours per week work limit) or another year of visa 485 to complete skill assessment.

Gardener or nurseryperson - who should study?

TRA is the skill assessing authority for those two occupations which requires 1 year full time paid employment after course completion for a positive skill assessment outcome.

Check out Job Ready Program (TRA Skill Assessment) - Step by Step here !

In order to have a full time work right, you have to hold a 485 visa or others working visa to fulfill the skill assessment requirement from TRA.

There are fewer options for those who wants to be a Gardener or Nurseryperson since those occupations are not listed in MLTSSL, meaning there is no option for Graduate work visa subclass 485 if you are going for Horticulture course, in return you have higher chance of being employed.

So the person who has fresh 2 years of 485 would be the most suitable one given that Covid-19 is over and work condition for student visa is back to limiting at 20 hours per week. For those people, having 1 year study horticulture course ( Certificate III Horticulture), working during your study to accumulate your work experience, and working full time as a Gardener or Nurseryperson for the rest of your 485 visa.
